Marian Hurd McNeely (1877–1930) wrote books as well as short stories and poems that appeared in Ladies' Home Journal, Literary Digest, and other periodicals. The Jumping-Off Place is based upon her experiences as a homesteader at South Dakota's Rosebud Indian Reservation.
