Una fructífera exhortación: Una guía a las Homilías

Junto a los Treinta y Nueve Artículos, el Libro de Oración Común y el Ordinal, los dos libros de Homilías forman parte de los documentos constitutivos de la iglesia de Inglaterra y, por lo tanto, son de considerable importancia para comprender tanto su historia como su docrina. Pero mientras que los otros son conocidos y de facil acceso, las Homilías aún permanecen en las sombras.

No obstante, todavía hay mucho en las Homilías que es de gran valor y sería una pena perderlo debido a las enormes dificultades involucradas en abordar hoy los textos originales. Por lo tanto, esta guía pretente proporcionar a los lectores y estudiantes modernos un puente que les permita acceder a lo que enseñan las Homilías y ayudarles a adaptar su mensaje permanente al uso y las circunstancias modernas. Cada homilía es bosquejada de acuerdo a sus propias divisiones y temas internos, y se proveen extractos de ellas en cursiva. Estos extractos tienen el propósito de resumir la enseñanza de la homilía en cuestión, pero también de ser usados en los tiempos actuales como citas en sermones predicados hoy sobre los mismos temas. Están pensaos como un recurso para el predicador y el maestro, así como una ayuda al estudiante de la Reforma inglesa.

Along with the Thirty-nine Articles, the Book of Common Prayer and the Ordinal, the two books of Homilies form part of the constitutive documents of the Church of England and are therefore of considerable importance for understanding both its history and its doctrine. But whereas the others are well-known and easily obtainable, the Homilies remain obscure.

Having said that, there is still much in the Homilies that is of great value and it would be a pity to lose that because of the formidable difficulties involved in tackling the original texts today. This Guide therefore aims to provide modern readers and students with a bridge that will help them gain access to what the Homilies teach and adapt them to modern usage and circumstances. Each homily is outlined according to its own internal divisions and themes, and extracts from them are provided in italics. These extracts are designed to sum up the teaching of the homily in question, but also to be capable of modern use as quotations in sermons preached on the same subjects today. They are therefore intended to be a resource for the preacher and teacher, as well as an aid to the student of the English Reformation.
