Often, they are extremely gifted, but perform poorly in school, especially with reading.As teachers, parents and family members, we need to understand the strengths and weaknesses which begin in early childhood and persist through adulthood. The characteristics of dyslexia, a neurobiological disorder, are often mistaken for laziness, carelessness, or disinterest.Become an advocate for these students in classrooms, church groups, Scout troops, athletic teams, music/art departments and others. Give them an opportunity for recognition.Our students who struggle with written language need academic instruction, but they also need hope and the knowledge that you care.
