This commentary is a biography of the legendary Joshua, mainly because the book of Joshua in the Old Testament is largely a biography itself. Joshua was a great warrior for the people of Israel and would lead the people into the long awaited Promised Land. He was the successor to Moses and an example of leadership to us all. William Garden Blaikie unabashedly draws on New Testament realities to bring light to Old Testament events. He refers to Mary Magdalene when introducing Rahab and thinks of Jesus himself when addressing the physical salvation of the people of Israel from her enemies.
William Garden Blaikie (1820-1899) was one of the founding ministers of the Free Church of Scotland. He served as pastor for twenty-five years before becoming the Professor of Apologetics and Ecclesiastical and Pastoral Theology at New College, Edinburgh – the theological school of the Free Church of Scotland.
