Flexible and creative, WriteShop is an ideal homeschool writing program for teens!
This new 5th edition features the following updates:
Faith-neutral content Updated, streamlined introduction Updated content in some lessons Updated student instructions Updated student & teacher checklists
WriteShop lessons give students a chance to practice descriptive, informative, and narrative writing through focusing on brainstorming, drafting, editing, and revision skills. Assignments teach descriptive and informative paragraphs as well as first-and third-person narratives, important techniques of style, and self-editing. Students learn to choose vivid, descriptive words and vary their sentences in order to build strong paragraphs. With each lesson, they learn and practice new skills, apply them to their current writing project, and edit and revise the composition several times. By the end of the lesson they'll have a polished paper to be proud of!
Students write one composition over a two-week period, revising it twice. Exercises are designed to be approached consecutively, incrementally building upon previously learned material. Students edit their papers met hodologically, using a Writing Skills Checklist tailored to the individual lesson.
The WriteShop Teacher's Guide covers both WriteShop I & WriteShop II and includes lesson plans, student writing samples, keys, appendixes, checklists, and more. Lesson plan tracks are included, with writings on each schedule corresponding to subheadings in the lesson plan. Lessons include materials needed, the lesson focus, "before you begin" notes, pre-writing activities with checklist, practice paragraphs, brainstorming, sloppy copy notes, first revision notes, final draft notes, and grading notes. Other sections provide instructions on editing and evaluating, common errors for each lesson, mechanical problems, supplemental activities, evaluation checklists, and more.
The WriteShop 1 Student Book is written directly to the student. The teacher's guide is still needed to teach the course, as the teacher's guide contains the teacher-specific instructions, keys, and evaluation notes. In this student book, lessons provide examples, lesson directions, and exercises---- some can be completed in-book, if desired, while others must be completed out-of-book. Copying and Dictation exercises may be assigned by the parent, or Copying and Dictation Exercises for WriteShop I booklet is available (sold-separately).
This kit includes 2 books: the teacher's guide and the student book for WriteShop 1, 5th Edition. Recommended for the average student in grades 6-10, or a bright 5th grader who's working with a parent; average 5th grade students may also spread the course out over two years. At the pace of one lesson every two weeks, students will finish WriteShop I in one year.
